The ex-HMAS Hobart was scuttled on November 5, 2002. The scuttling was viewed by numerous boats and people standing on the Rapid Bay foreshore. Previously berthed at Port Adelaide, the ship was towed to Yankalilla Bay on November 3, 2002.
The ship was sunk using a controlled flooding exercise. Once anchored at the site additional holes were cut in the exterior of the ship (close to the waterline) and small explosive cutting charges placed on the hull below the waterline. This enabled the ship to fill with water relatively quickly, with sinking taking only around four minutes.
